Put simply, the purpose of the Fan District Hub is to serve its neighborhood by providing the modern equivalent to its precursor — the kiosk bearing posted notices in a town square. The Hub’s mission is to be a useful alternative source of information, a “community blog.”
Even as that rather new term’s definition evolves, the Hub is also striving to be a lean online magazine, of a sort, published to entertain and engage its urban-centric readers — folks who live, work, study, and enjoying recreating in the Fan District.
The Fan District is more than a bunch of nice buildings. In many ways it is the cultural epicenter of the greater Richmond area, with Virginia Commonwealth University as the biggest player in that quaking metaphor.
Having lived in the Fan for most of my life, I hope some of my experience in alternative media — managing a movie theater in the neighborhood, the Biograph, and publishing a Fan-based magazine, SLANT — will prove useful in this new endeavor. Still, the Hub’s success will depend in great part on the emergence of reliable volunteers providing information to the site.

RVANews is a collective of Richmond area blogs, news, and all things awesome. We’re here to make your Internet perusal as convenient and River-City-Centric as possible. Because, well, we love Richmond and we think you should too.
RVANews is made up of two pieces: original and aggregated content.
Original content is just that: content written by some well-paid freelance joker or one of our fabulous columnists. The aggregated content is provided by Richmond’s fantastic network of community blogs.
Scattered throughout Richmond’s neighborhoods are a dozen or so hyperlocal community blogs. These blogs (Church Hill People’s News for example) provide immediate and insightful coverage of events that matter to the neighborhood. If you aggregate these together you get a good picture of what is going on in Richmond.

What do we consider our community? There are no hard & fast boundaries, but the general idea is to follow the general Forest Hill/Semmes corridor, including such neighborhoods as Westover Hills, Forest Hill, Woodland Heights, Forest View Heights and Stratford Hills. But this is just a starting point, and that area may expand or contract based on demand and/or the birth of other neighborhood sites.
